About Random Year Generator

Generate random years across CE and BCE, within a range you control, in standard or traditional notation

What is it?

Our Random Year Generator produces years from across recorded history and into the future, with the era spelled out so there's no ambiguity. Unlike a plain number picker, it understands the timeline: you can draw from the Common Era (1–9999 CE), sample Before Common Era years reaching back roughly three millennia, or mix both — and the result always carries its CE/BCE (or AD/BC) label. It's made for writers anchoring a story in a period, teachers building history quizzes, worldbuilders dating events on a timeline, and developers who need believable year values for test data rather than just random integers.

How it works?

Choose an Era Type — Common Era (CE/AD), Before Common Era (BCE/BC), or Both. For Common Era you can set a Min and Max year anywhere from 1 to 9999 to focus a decade, century, or whole epoch; BCE draws span roughly the last 3,000 years. Pick a Format — Standard (2024 CE / 500 BCE) or Traditional (2024 AD / 500 BC) — then generate. Every year is chosen with a cryptographically secure random source; turn off 'Allow Duplicates' for a distinct set, and 'Sort Results' to lay the years out chronologically from earliest to latest.

Everything you need to know about our random year generator

You can generate years from 1 CE to 9999 CE for Common Era, random BCE years from ancient history, or mix both eras. The tool supports historical periods from ancient civilizations to far future dates.

CE (Common Era) and AD (Anno Domini) refer to the same time period - years after the traditional birth of Christ. BCE (Before Common Era) and BC (Before Christ) refer to years before that event. Our tool uses the modern CE/BCE notation by default but can display in traditional AD/BC format.

Yes! You can set custom ranges like Medieval period (500-1500 CE), Ancient Rome (753 BCE - 476 CE), or any specific era you're interested in. Just adjust the min/max year settings accordingly.

The years themselves are mathematically accurate, but remember that historical dating can be complex due to calendar changes (like the switch from Julian to Gregorian calendar). For academic research, always verify historical dates with primary sources.

Yes, you can disable the 'Allow Duplicates' option to ensure each generated year is unique within your current session. This is useful when you need distinct years for research or creative projects.

We offer two clear formats: Standard (2024 CE/500 BCE) using modern academic notation, and Traditional (2024 AD/500 BC) using classic historical notation. Both formats consistently show the era designation for clarity.

Tips & Best Practices

Pro tips to get the most out of this generator

Set a meaningful range

Constrain the range to an era you care about — a decade for nostalgia, centuries for historical fiction.

Mind BCE/CE

Include negative years to sample ancient history, or keep it modern for realistic test data.

Seed timelines

Use random years as anchor points for worldbuilding, trivia, or sampling archival data.
